If you wear daily disposable contact lenses, chances are you’ve come across both Dailies (by Alcon) and Acuvue (by Johnson & Johnson). Both are widely prescribed silicone hydrogel dailies with strong track records for comfort. But they take different approaches to lens design, and those differences matter depending on how your eyes feel throughout the day.
This post breaks down what sets each brand apart so you can go into your next eye care appointment with a clearer picture.
The Brands at a Glance
Dailies is Alcon’s daily disposable line. The flagship product, Dailies Total1, is built around water gradient technology, a design where water content starts at 33% at the lens core and increases to nearly 100% at the outermost surface. That surface mimics the eye’s natural environment, which is why many wearers report the lenses feel almost undetectable on the eye.
Acuvue is Johnson & Johnson’s daily line. The top-tier option is Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe Technology. HydraLuxe is a tear-inspired design that integrates with your natural tear film to reduce friction and maintain moisture, particularly useful during extended screen use.

Hydration and Comfort
Both lenses are built for all-day wear, but they handle hydration differently.
Dailies Total1 uses a layered approach. The silicone hydrogel core allows oxygen to pass through the lens while the ultra-soft outer layer creates a near-100% water surface that sits against the eye. Alcon’s SmarTears technology releases phosphatidylcholine, a component found in natural tears to help maintain surface lubricity over time. In clinical surveys, 9 out of 10 wearers reported the lens was comfortable enough that they sometimes forgot they had it on.
Acuvue Oasys 1-Day works differently. The HydraLuxe network is woven throughout the lens material itself, designed to interact with your eye’s own tear film rather than supplement it externally. In a clinical trial among wearers who used digital devices for 8 or more hours a day, this lens performed well in end-of-day comfort and reduced dryness symptoms compared to other dailies tested.
Oxygen Transmissibility
Oxygen transmissibility measured as Dk/t, reflects how much oxygen reaches the cornea through the lens. Since the cornea has no blood vessels, it relies on atmospheric oxygen to stay healthy.
Dailies Total1 has a Dk/t of 156, the highest recorded for any daily disposable lens. Acuvue Oasys 1-Day sits at 121 Dk/t, which is still well above the threshold considered adequate for daily wear. For most wearers, both figures support healthy long-term use. If your eyes are especially sensitive to oxygen deprivation, the gap may be worth discussing with your eye doctor.
UV Protection
This is one of the clearer differences between the two brands.
Acuvue Oasys 1-Day carries built-in Class 1 UV blocking, the highest classification available in a contact lens. It blocks more than 99% of UVB rays and more than 90% of UVA rays. Contact lenses do not cover the full eye area, so UV-blocking lenses do not replace sunglasses. That said, the added protection during outdoor exposure is a meaningful distinction.
Dailies Total1 does not include UV protection. For wearers who spend a lot of time outdoors, that is a relevant factor to weigh.
Lens Options
Both brands cover a wide range of prescriptions and vision needs.
Dailies Total1 is available in sphere, toric (for astigmatism), and multifocal. Acuvue Oasys 1-Day is also available in sphere, toric, and multifocal.
For astigmatism wearers, Acuvue Oasys 1-Day for Astigmatism uses an eyelid-stabilized design that holds its position through head and eye movement. Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism uses Alcon’s Precision Balance 8|4 design for similar rotational stability. Both have been shown to perform reliably across different eye shapes and prescription ranges.
Who Each Lens Tends to Suit
Dailies Total1 may work well if you:
- Experience significant dryness or discomfort toward the end of the day
- Want the highest available oxygen transmissibility in a daily lens
- Prefer a lens with a very low surface sensation
Acuvue Oasys 1-Day may work well if you:
- Spend long hours in front of screens
- Want UV protection built into the lens itself
- Prefer a lens with a visible inside-out indicator for easier handling
A Note on Pricing
Both are premium daily disposables, and both are priced at the higher end of the daily lens market. Dailies Total1 typically runs slightly higher per box. Acuvue frequently offers rebate programs that can reduce annual costs. Final pricing depends on your prescription parameters, purchase volume, and where you buy. It is worth comparing costs across vendors before committing to a supply.
Talk to Your Eye Doctor
No comparison replaces a proper lens fitting. The right choice depends on your corneal shape, prescription, tear chemistry, and daily habits. Both brands are widely available for trial fittings through eye care offices, so testing each one firsthand is always a practical step before ordering in bulk.
