{"id":1153,"date":"2024-02-06T15:29:08","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T15:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.1800getlens.com\/eyetopics\/?p=1153"},"modified":"2024-02-06T15:29:15","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T15:29:15","slug":"what-is-lasik-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.1800getlens.com\/eyetopics\/what-is-lasik-2\/","title":{"rendered":"What is LASIK?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LASIK &#8211; the acronym for <em>L<\/em><em>aser-<\/em><em>As<\/em><em>sisted <\/em><em>I<\/em><em>n Situ <\/em><em>K<\/em><em>eratomileusis<\/em> &#8211; is an elective surgical procedure that uses a cool (non-thermal) laser beam to change the shape of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) to improve vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LASIK procedure consists of two steps:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 In Step One, the surgeon creates a circular, micro-thin flap of corneal tissue.\u00a0This can be done with an instrument called a <em>microkeratome<\/em> &#8211; which uses a disposable surgical blade to create the incision &#8211; or it can be performed with a blade-free instrument called the <em>IntraLase<\/em> laser.\u00a0Whichever device is used, a small area of tissue is left untouched at one end of the flap to keep it attached to the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In Step Two, the surgeon folds back the flap and uses an <em>excimer<\/em> laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue.&nbsp; The flap is then returned to its original position, where it seals without stitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The excimer laser removes tiny amounts of tissue to flatten the cornea (to correct\u00a0 nearsightedness), steepen the cornea (to correct farsightedness), and\/or make the cornea more symmetrical in shape (to correct astigmatism).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LASIK &#8211; the acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis &#8211; is an elective surgical procedure that uses a cool (non-thermal) laser beam to change the shape of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) to improve vision.
